My biggest guess and bonkers if true is that Injustice 3 and MKXII are just project place holders or just confusing spread of rumours (NRS is famous for these kinds of things; think about the file names of the last dlc characters in Injustice2) and that they will release a MK vs DC 2 and somehow make the gore work for both WB and logic gameplay and story.
