Before Spelunky it was usually clear what a roguelike was, as all roguelikes were very similar -- a kind of turn-based grid-based tactical RPG which emphasized the mechanical aspect (rather than telling a story, as mainstream CRPGs do) and thus based on procedural generation and permadeath.
